Review of International Express Intermediate by Pete Sharma for the Bournemouth English Book Centre, published in May 2014 issue of EL Gazette. The first edition of International Express was innovative, providing a new course for adult professional learners. This third edition contains completely new material, and the layout is instantly recognisable. The ten units consist of four strands. The grammar and functional language strands have the same structure: introduction, language focus, practice activities and, finally, a more open task.
The ‘Work skills’ strand is new and provides useful input. The vocabulary strand contains relevant business terms. Teachers will need to supplement work on phonology.
The topic areas, such as heritage, processes, time management and the Olympic Games, are engaging. A useful DVD provides ten video clips and all the audio recordings. I like the popular ‘pocket book’ at the back containing everyday phrases. Sound, dependable material.
